The 2016 Rio project is gaining momentum. The Marvelous City plans open-air competitions during the 16 days of the Olympic Games. The aim is to make the most of Rio's rich nature to provide a unique event - a celebration of beauty and the importance of sport.
The world-famous region of Copacabana will be the backdrop to disciplines such as canoeing, kayaking, rowing, marathon, beach volleyball and sailing. The modern Barra Region will take advantage of excellent infrastructure that is already in place. It will host water sports, gymnastics, basketball, judo and more. More than half of the Olympic Games facilities already exist in the city of Rio de Janeiro and another 20% will be built regardless of the Olympic outcome.
In all, there will be seven competition centers in four Olympic regions. All of the competitions will be held in the city of Rio de Janeiro, with half of the sporting events taking place 5 or 10 minutes from the Olympic Village. This will be very practical for the athletes, media and spectators, who will not need to cover long distances to get to the competition sites.
The weather during the period proposed for the event, August 5-21 for the Olympic Games and September 7-18 for the Paralympic Games, will be pleasant in Rio de Janeiro, plenty of sunshine, very little rainfall and the mild temperatures of a tropical winter. School and university vacation periods will be adjusted so that everyone can get into the spirit of the Games and take part in events.
With a detailed, coherent plan prepared by the city, state and country, the objective is to make this Olympic Games unforgettable. Every year, Rio is visited by millions of people from around the world. In 2016, the entire city will be in celebration mode, ready to receive the Olympic Games and play host to a cultural mix from every corner of the globe.
