Barra da Tijuca is among Rio's newest neighborhoods, boasting a modern urban infrastructure that nonetheless treasures the natural beauty of the beaches, lagoon and lush mountain forests that make Rio de Janeiro among the most striking cities in the world.
More thank half of the Olympic facilities and the Olympic Park will be located in Barra. The Olympic Park's modern sports equipment was successfully tested during the 2007 Pan-American and Parapan-American Games. Existing infrastructure will be incorporated into the Olympic Training Center, including:
The Olympic Arena of Rio, which holds 15,000 spectators and would host the basketball and artistic gymnastics competitions.
The Maria Lenk Aquatic Park would host swimming and synchronized swimming.
The Barra Velodrome, considered to be the most modern of its kind in Latin America, would host cycling.
The National Tennis Center and the Olympic Training Center are planned to host 14 competitions in 20 disciplines at four pavilions spanning 40,000 square meters. Sports planned for these arenas include gymnastics (acrobatic trampoline), hockey, water polo, handball, judo, wrestling and Greco-Roman wrestling.
Riocentro, the largest exhibition center in Latin America and elected among the best convention centers in South America (2002 to 2007 - World Travel Awards), would host the 2016 badminton, rhythmic gymnastics, taekwondo, boxing table tennis and weightlifting. The center, which covers about half a million square meters, was recently remodeled. Finally, Barra will be home to the International Center of Radio and Television (IBC), the International Press Center (MPC), two Media Villages with more than 9,000 rooms. The Olympic Village, with a capacity to host 17,500 people, and the Olympic family hotels, will also be in Barra.
